The NorCal Vision

If you’ve been following the NorCal Blog the past 18 months or so you know that most of our posts have been focused on keeping everyone updated on construction-related projects.  In a previous post, Mark Shafer outlined all the key project construction plans for 2018. With that, we thought now would be a great time to update everyone on some of the more strategic aspects of the NorCal Adventure Area. To that end, I’m thrilled to announce that our newest guest blogger is Mike Boggs, the current GEC President.

Before Mike took on the role of Council President, he was GEC’s VP of Strategy. As part of that role, Mike created and headed up the first NorCal Adventure Area committee which focused on the vision for NorCal. In fact, I interviewed Mike a couple of times early on in the process of developing NorCal’s vision–you can view those interviews here and here.

Mike is an Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow (OA) and was a Cubmaster for Pack 97 in Folsom. He is also currently Scoutmaster for Troop 1855 in Folsom, and Area VP, and Region committee member for Leadership and Performance. Mike is also on the OA National Technology Sub-Committee and is an OA Section W3N Associate Adviser, and of course our current Council President. Whew! Mike’s son Andrew is an Eagle Scout and OA Vigil Honor member, and his daughter Katherine is Venturing Council VOA President. His youngest daughter Lily is not involved in scouting, yet!

Thank you, Mike, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to help spread the word about the NorCal vision.

NorCal Vision, by Mike Boggs

Back in December of 2015, the Yuba County Board of Supervisors agreed to donate in-deed the property we now call the NorCal Adventure Area. Thanks to the efforts of a lot of people, a tremendous amount of planning and progress has been made since then. However, I’m a bit surprised that I still run across Scouters in our Council who don’t know a lot about the overall NorCal vision. I’m happy to be able to help spread the word about the exciting things we have planned for NorCal over the years to come. I’ll be writing a series of blog posts that will cover all aspects of the NorCal strategy including:

  • The Vision
  • The Plan
  • The Programs
  • The Implementation
  • The Future

NorCal is the future of leadership outdoor excellence for Golden Empire Council and all of Northern California. I look forward to spending some time with you over the next few months outlining the vision for your newest camp. Stay tuned!
